How To Style a T-shirt and Jeans

How do you elevate a simple t-shirt and jeans? This is a question I often hear.
I realize when you are working from home, or are spending a casual day at home, you still want to look and feel good.
I also believe your significant other and your family, appreciate you looking like you put some  thought into your look.
What can you do to take your t-shirt and jeans look up a notch when running errands?
Today I am wearing cropped boyfriend jeans from Macy’s and a red and navy stripe t-shirt from Old Navy.
To level it up… I added a simple neckpiece, a blue stone on a silver collar, and I added cute navy patent shoes with a red heel.
Since it was cool, I added my favourite jean jacket from Not Your Daughters Jeans. I can also wear it with a fringed navy sweater.

If you would like assistance in elevating your every day look, I am happy to help.

MEOW!! Timeless Leopard Print

Leopard print really does seem timeless, as it continues to show up year after year.
It is a print I love too!
I am a cool colour palette though so the traditional browns and caramels in a leopard print doesn’t suit me, especially near my face.
Designers are giving us leopard print in every conceivable type of clothing and accessory: scarves, jackets, handbags, pants, tops, shoes and of course underclothes.
Did you know that animal prints are actually considered to be a neutral?

Too much of it at one time is not a good thing though! I suggest one item in animal print on your body at one time, except you could wear a scarf and gloves, or scarf and handbag or scarf and animal print shoes.
Notice those are all accessories.

I am a METAL element in Fashion Feng Shui and I like refinement in my look, so I choose neutral tones to wear with my animal prints.
I am featuring this leopard print car coat I bought at Old Navy. It has grey in it, so I can pair it with a column of grey underneath. It looks great with jeans too.

I tend to buy trends at a lower price point, because they come and go. Keep quality in your core basics though, because they can last for many years.

Do you own clothing or accessory items in animal print?
How do you wear them?

I would love you to send me a comment or post a picture.

I invite you to join our Facebook group, “Level Up your Image in Business, Life and Love” and continue the discussion there!

Is It Summer or Fall?

One weekend I was wearing jeans and a knit poncho to the Farmer’s Market and the next week I was wearing a sleeveless top and shorts. What is up?

I am loving the stretch of warm weather we are having but I am also pulling out my white jeans again and searching for flowy dresses that don’t cling.

How are you coping with the heat?

The stores are filled with lovely Fall trends that I am itching to wear.
Layering is the key to transitioning your summer clothes to Fall and Winter.

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a fashion show at Oakridge Outfitters in Aurora, Ontario.
Lynn Spence, a stylist with Cityline T.V. was there to give up the scoop on the Fall trends and YES… LAYERING was the word!

Start with a t-shirt or tunic top. Add a poncho, a wrap a cardigan or a moto jacket over for some warmth when you first start out in the morning. Of course adding a scarf keeps your neck warm and is a wonderful accessory.

If you choose a dress, you can add a cardigan or a wrap or… a beautiful sweater coat.

For your feet, the most popular item is a bootie and the peep toe style is the go-to.

If you are wondering how to put your summer items to work along with a new Fall trend, give me a call.

My favourite activity is creating new looks from the clothes you already have.

Have you joined our private Facebook group, Level Up Your Image in Business, Life and Love yet? We are having fun discussing types of jeans and getting opinions on whether a woman over 50 should wear the distressed jean look.

THIS… Is Why I Hired You!

We are in the season of weddings and I know you want to look good too, as the Mother of the Bride or Groom.  It is important for you to be able to enjoy the day and the lead up, with comfort and ease, knowing you look and feel great. You don’t have to be worrying about your outfit because… WE have put it together, together!

This is exactly what happened the other day. I took a client shopping for a dress for her son’s wedding. She knew she wanted elegance, not too fussy since it is at their farm, and she wanted to be able to move and dance in it. In other words, to look beautiful and still be comfortable.

The first step was covered… we know her colour palette. I know her body type and features.  Our saleslady was wonderful and so helpful, however, she kept showing my client styles that SHE liked. Finally, I said, just try it on and let’s see.

One, the fabric was too heavy. A satin that didn’t have movement. Yes, it was elegant but it had a fish tail at the bottom and was too tight on the legs. My client would never be able to dance, twirl and party in this!  Two, this dress had a smooth sheen to it. My client has curly hair, somewhat athletic features and the dress didn’t repeat that.

My client knew something wasn’t quite right (the dress did fit) and as soon as I explained the WHY it did not suit her, she got it!  In fact, she turned to me and said,” THIS is why I wanted you with me today! I knew you would give me honest opinions and know what would and wouldn’t work.”

Then, VOILA, a dress with shirring on the top that mimicked the texture in her hair, a stunning colour to match her vibrant personality (and blended with the wedding party colours), and best of all she could move in it. It was elegant, simple, she could vary the sleeves to cover her shoulders, the tightness in the bodice made her look slimmer and the crystal embellishment at the waist was a perfect touch.  After simple alterations of letting the bodice out a little and hemming the dress, she is set!

I know she is stepping out to fully enjoy the day.

Are you needing to buy a dress for a special occasion? Call me I am happy to guide you through the overwhelm.

I want to give a shout out to the dress shop: EDITH’S 1113 Finch Ave. West, Toronto,  opens at 10 am.  Our saleslady was Mahnaz, truly a lovely person, and a great help. Mahnaz also was right on when she said that some of the dresses we picked out would be too old looking.  She saved us time!

Don’t Give Your Booties the Boot… 5 Tips on How to Wear Booties.

You’ve seen them in store windows and on women of all ages: booties or shoe boots as I call them.
They look cute on others but you aren’t sure if you can wear them.
You have doubts. I bet I can guess what you’re thinking. Am I too old to wear booties?
How do people wear booties with socks?
Should I get a slouchy one or a slim one?
What kind of pants do you wear booties?
Will they go out of style?

Lots of questions but lucky for you, I have lots of answers. Booties offer style solutions and they are not going out of style anytime soon!

  1. If you choose booties in a colour such as burgundy, teal or red, then connect the colour to your outfit in another piece of clothing or an accessory.
  2. Booties in light colours, such as sand or taupe can be worn with winter white or similar taupe colours.
  3. They also look great with darker denims or pants as a contrasting colour, especially if you are tall and can spare the height.
  4. Choose a bootie that relates to your hair colour, so it brings the eye of the observer up to your face and hair. This will tie almost any outfit together.
  5. Booties in metallic shades can add glitz or glamour or dressiness to any outfit.
  6. Ankle booties that are low cut in the vamp are great for slim over-the-knee pencil skirts. This bootie style elongates the leg.

Have some fun trying on various styles and wear an outfit you think you would like to pair them with.
Or… call me ! I am happy to go Bootie shopping with you!

3 Great Fashion Outfits with Colour for the Holiday Season

In my last two blogs, I wrote about alternatives to wearing black and 4 places we might find you donning colour. Here is one more place you may be this holiday season and 3 great fashion outfits that encompass colour for you to consider. I am not suggesting you need to dress in red and green this season, but you can start by adding colour in a piece here and there. Maybe step gingerly into colour with a neutral, perhaps navy, grey or a deep forest green to replace black.

Theatre or Ballet

The Nutcracker performances, holiday concerts, or theater events are plentiful in the month of December. Will you be attending? If you’re hitting the big city for a show, you may also be getting dinner or drinks beforehand. Make this occasion extra special by looking radiant in colour. If you’re attending matinee performances with your children, don’t be too casual. A few selected pieces will add to the spirit of the holidays whether it’s casual or dressy.

A burgundy velvet long-sleeved top layered with a faux fur stole in burgundy will look divine with a wide legged dark gray, flowy pant.

  • A snow leopard print stretchy knit dress with a cropped white faux fur jacket will fit right into this month’s events.
  • A multi-colored graphic print wool coat makes a grand entrance over a smoky blue pantsuit or jumpsuit.

I hope you ‘Deck the Halls’ with colour this season…Falalalala… Let these holidays leave you with great memories. I’m happy to help you pull together the outfits that will make every event stress-free! Just give me a call.

In my last blog post, we talked about alternatives to wearing black this holiday season. I proposed solutions for two different scenarios. In this blog post we will cover 2 more occasions where you can wear colourful fashion. Oh… it’s all true – those things we have heard about black: it is slimming (so is any dark colour), it goes with everything (so do pieces in your colour palette) and it is easy to travel with (have you tried building with a base of navy or brown). But did you know there are drawbacks to relying on black? It can make you look older and more tired than you are and… it ages you!! This holiday season, take a new look at colour. There are lots of choices that will harmonize with your skin and hair colouring, so you look radiant. Continue reading
