From PREDICTABLE to PDA!

I just had a wonderful conversation with a woman, explaining what it is I do, since she was over to interview me before signing me up to speak at their store. Our conversation gave me the idea for this story.

I was so happy to know she loves wearing colour and therefore really stands out in her family.

She is sad that her sister lives in black and yoga pants. And… she said that now her Mother has retired, she has given up!

“She is PREDICTABLE and BORING. All she does is throw on a pair of pants and a t-shirt! She has lost a reason to dress with some interest since she says she is ONLY at home.”

”What message is her Mother sending to herself, her husband, her family and her friends?” I ask.

“I have given up.” is her look!

Is that you? Are you predictable, plain and boring to yourself and your family?

I am here to hold your hand and take you out of that rut! Have some FUN in your life and in your closet!

Weddings… Beach, Garden, Traditional… OH MY!

Whether you are Mother of the Bride or Groom, or attending a wedding this year, I am sure you have asked yourself, “What am I going to wear?”

You are not alone. Now with all the various locations and times of weddings, it can be even more confusing.

I am here to guide you with 3 tips to get started.

(1) Location, location, location:

Where the wedding takes place plays a big part in what is appropriate to wear.

A wedding in a big hotel or even a country club is going to be more formal.

A beach wedding is more casual and a garden wedding will be in between.

If the wedding is outdoors, consider wearing a long sundress and beware… no spiked heels since you will be sinking into the sand or grass.

(2) Time of day:

The key here is that night-time weddings are dressier.

Daytime weddings are informal or semi- formal. You can wear a 2 piece suit or top and satiny type of skirt, or a cocktail dress. It is best to avoid wearing black to a daytime wedding.

DON’T go ultra casual to a wedding… it is the Bride’s important day so respect her and the occasion!

(3) Invitation specific:

Many invitations specify the type of attire, yet you may still be wondering.

Casual: This may mean a beach wedding, a BBQ, a barn? These may not mean a long dress, however, it still means you need to dress up and the big change will be the shoes.

Cocktail: Here is pretty straight forward… a cocktail dress is the most appropriate. This also generally means it is not a floor length gown.

Black tie: If the invitation says Black Tie, you will see floor length gowns, yet you can be elegant in a cocktail dress, especially if it comes to the knee. Add your accessories here to take it to a higher level.

White tie: This is as formal as you can get!!

Casual dresses are from ZuZu Fashion Boutique in Barrie.

How to Make Summer Event Wardrobe Worries Disappear

Summer is fast approaching and with it comes weddings, BBQ parties, pool parties etc.

As a fashion and wardrobe coach, I hear from my clients about the things that stress them out and getting dressed for summer events is one of them.

I want you to feel at ease with yourself and stress-free. Let’s see if I can help you do that!

“I’m worried about looking appropriate for an upcoming event.”

Events can be a bit tricky, as you’re not only dressing for the event; you’re dressing for the venue, the people, and the weather. The first thing to do when starting to plan your look for an event is to study the invitation. Does it have a dress code on it alerting you to the type of outfit you should be wearing? Is the invitation design formal or informal? Every invitation holds clues for you.

The next thing you can do is research the location of the event. Google is your friend here. Look up what the weather will be like during the days you’ll be there or how the weather normally behaves during that time of year. What will also help is to look at the venue’s website for photos of previous events held at this location. Even though you may be attending an event in a barn, you may see by the photos that elegant parties are the norm.

By researching these different factors, you can more confidently figure out an outfit that you’d feel comfortable in and one that would be appropriate for the setting as well.

Of course, if you have been following me, you know I will recommend that you wear outfits that compliment your skin undertone and your body shape. Those alone will help boost your confidence.

Too Hot For Capris or Jeans?

What Are You Wearing This Holiday Weekend?

It is the May long weekend here in Ontario and the weather is finally matching the date!

Are you traveling to a cottage? Visiting friends? Maybe sightseeing?

Here in Barrie, it is beautiful to walk at the waterfront and the restaurants with their street patios are pulsing with energy.

Are you already finding it a challenge to know what to wear in the heat and still feel comfortable and in style?

I am going to share my “go to” dresses with you! I really enjoy wearing longer dresses. They fall nicely to cover my tummy area, and cover my legs. So I look dressy, yet relaxed.

Yes, being only 5’0, can sometimes pose a problem with finding long dresses, however, they are out there!

For a cool evening, you can pair your dress with the popular look of a jean jacket.

To get started on discovering styles for the summer, I invite you to join me in a closet edit, so you know what is hiding in there!

3 Closet Cleaning Tips You May NOT Know!

Is your closet out of control?

Do you experience stress each time you open the doors?

Do you waste precious time and energy each morning trying to choose an outfit?

Do you feel overwhelmed at the thought of de-cluttering your closet and sorting through all the years of memories, poor purchases and body changes and sizes?

Here are 3 ways to help you navigate without getting over stressed and … to help you stay on track.

  1. Backwards: Everytime you wear something, hang it up with the hangar facing backwards. This way you will be able to see what you have worn. The trick is NOT to wear it again until you have gone through most of the clothes in your closet, that you wear often. Then, you can see what hasn’t been touched.
  2. Out of sight, out of mind: Try on clothes and those that don’t fit or are out of style, can  be put in a garbage bag and placed in the back of your closet or in a storage area. If you haven’t opened that bag in a year, then promise yourself to toss it. You probably won’t even miss what is in there!
  3. Limit your hangars: Have only a certain amount of hangars in your closet holding the clothes that fit you NOW!! When you buy something new, you have to get rid of something before you can hang the new item in your closet. This is wonderful if you have limited closet space.

When to Let Go

Everyone experiences opening their closet door and seeing items that they haven’t worn. Could it be that it’s time to let go of some things? Or do you think you should give those items a few more chances?

What would be the benefits of letting go? If you’re not constantly looking at items that make you stop and wonder whether they belong there anymore, your chances go way up for seeing the things you love and want to wear.

There may be things in your closet that could be of service to others if you were to donate them to a charity. You may even have pieces that don’t seem right for you that could earn some money if you were to take them to a consignment store.

So why is it so hard to make some edits to your wardrobe? We have memories and stories attached to clothes. We have guilt about buying and not wearing what we purchased. It’s hard to face that waste of money. Or we look at clothes that were bought hastily or purchased while emotions were running high. It reminds us of habits we’d rather not face.

The good news is that you’re not alone. Chances are most people have things hanging in their closets that should be in someone else’s closet, not theirs. These shopping misses or the holding on of clothes that don’t serve you in your current lifestyle are signs that you’re human.

This is an area where I can’t stress enough how helpful it is to have a professional wardrobe consultant there to help you with this process. Someone objective can help you assess whether you should hold on to something or let it go. That professional consultant has worked in hundreds of closets and has no judgment about yours. She knows that once you’re clear about what should stay and what should go, you’ll have freed up so much mental and physical space. You’ll feel light and buoyant—like you’ve lost weight or been on a vacation—once you have an exit plan for clothing that’s no longer serving you.

I’d like to give you some practice homework to try in your own closet. Click here to get your 21 Reasons to Let Go! Once you understand some of the reasons clothes need to go, you may end up making lots of progress on your own. Then you can call on someone to help you in the final round on the pieces that you’re still wondering about. How does that sound?

Plan on spending some time in your closet—whatever you think you can handle at one time. It can be thirty minutes, an hour or two, or maybe an afternoon on the weekend.

Remember… we usually only wear 20% of all the clothes in our closet… 80% of the time. Let’s make it a GREAT 20%!!

Don’t Give Your Booties the Boot… 5 Tips on How to Wear Booties.

You’ve seen them in store windows and on women of all ages: booties or shoe boots as I call them.
They look cute on others but you aren’t sure if you can wear them.
You have doubts. I bet I can guess what you’re thinking. Am I too old to wear booties?
How do people wear booties with socks?
Should I get a slouchy one or a slim one?
What kind of pants do you wear booties?
Will they go out of style?

Lots of questions but lucky for you, I have lots of answers. Booties offer style solutions and they are not going out of style anytime soon!

  1. If you choose booties in a colour such as burgundy, teal or red, then connect the colour to your outfit in another piece of clothing or an accessory.
  2. Booties in light colours, such as sand or taupe can be worn with winter white or similar taupe colours.
  3. They also look great with darker denims or pants as a contrasting colour, especially if you are tall and can spare the height.
  4. Choose a bootie that relates to your hair colour, so it brings the eye of the observer up to your face and hair. This will tie almost any outfit together.
  5. Booties in metallic shades can add glitz or glamour or dressiness to any outfit.
  6. Ankle booties that are low cut in the vamp are great for slim over-the-knee pencil skirts. This bootie style elongates the leg.

Have some fun trying on various styles and wear an outfit you think you would like to pair them with.
Or… call me ! I am happy to go Bootie shopping with you!

Are You Sabotaging Yourself?

Join me Tuesday Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. or Wednesday Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. for my webinar called G.O.A.L.S.

Have you ever found yourself excited to set your goals and then 3 to 5 days into it, you make excuses and stop?  Then, it’s a never ending conversation of negativity in your head, beating yourself up because you didn’t continue.

Do you know that changing your appearance or at least tweaking some things can assist you in sticking to your goals?

Let’s take daily exercise for an example. If you put your exercise clothes out the night before, so you can easily jump into them in the morning, your brain knows these clothes can allow movement and your body feels more energetic in them.
When you do this daily, it sets a routine in your mind and body as well as with yourself.
