In my last blog post, we talked about alternatives to wearing black this holiday season. I proposed solutions for two different scenarios. In this blog post we will cover 2 more occasions where you can wear colourful fashion. Oh… it’s all true – those things we have heard about black: it is slimming (so is any dark colour), it goes with everything (so do pieces in your colour palette) and it is easy to travel with (have you tried building with a base of navy or brown). But did you know there are drawbacks to relying on black? It can make you look older and more tired than you are and… it ages you!! This holiday season, take a new look at colour. There are lots of choices that will harmonize with your skin and hair colouring, so you look radiant.
1. Business Cocktail Party
While it can be fun to celebrate the holidays with your colleagues, it’s not really the place to let loose. In fact, it is best to have some food in your stomach before you show up and limit the number of drinks you consume. Refrain from wearing your sexiest outfits in this setting. Play a more conservative card so no colourful office stories follow you into 2016.
Wear an olive green, or navy leather skirt with a tucked in shimmery, gold or silver silk blouse. Add a kitten heel in a hounds tooth plaid or tartan fabric for fun.
- Wear a party pant in a jewel tone colour (sapphire, emerald, ruby, or amber) or a jacquard print with a simple sweater or blouse in white or ivory. Add some bling in a colour-filled statement necklace.
- My favourite of course is wearing head-to-toe neutral colours. It can be beautiful. When you focus on one colour, be sure you vary the textures in each piece. Choose your bottom—a long skirt, shorter skirt, pants or culottes—and add a cashmere sweater. Decide on single shades of gray, champagne, forest green, silver, blush or ivory and you’ll stand out in a sophisticated way. Add your fine jewelry and you’re good to go!
I have shown you a grey plaid, shimmery top and grey pants, with a crystal necklace.
2. New Year’s Eve
Where will you be for the countdown? Hopefully not in a predictable black dress! Whether you are at a gala or an intimate house party, stand out with colour, print and/or textures. This holiday is all about celebrating good times so have fun creating excitement in your outfit.
A navy blue tuxedo pantsuit, metallic sequined pump, and an ivory silk blouse will be comfortable and festive. If heels are out of the question, go for a metallic flat but be sure your pants are tailored accordingly. You don’t want to be tripping over your pant legs!
In this picture I have featured a shimmery, navy top and flowy pants. The buttons are large crystals, so the necklace is perfect with it. Add sparkly silver shoes.
- If you have a dramatic style personality, arrive in a silk cranberry jumpsuit with ankle wrap heels and a midnight blue leather moto jacket. Add shine with a bold necklace and a bangle or two. You might be mistaken for a rock star.
- A pink satin top can be paired with a dark dressy jean for an urban loft party. Add a pearly white tuxedo jacket, heels and long metallic necklaces to complete the look.
Stay tuned next week for the third and final blog with more great holiday fashion ideas containing alternatives to black!
