It’s that time of year. You look in your closet and nothing looks fun or interesting. You’re sick of your wardrobe, your skin needs some vitamin D, and you’re ready to come out of hibernation. But how do you put spring in your fashion step when the weather’s not cooperating? No worries, here are 5 tips for changing up your look in this transitional time between seasons.
1. Show (the illusion of) More Skin
- Layer long-sleeved sheer tops over camisoles and add a swing cardigan in a lighter color if you need more warmth.
- Choose a lower neckline. Try a scoop neck long-sleeved T-shirt or sweater instead of a crew neck.
- Cuff your skinny jeans and wear flats or ankle booties to show off a bare ankle.
- Swap out opaque black tights for colored ones or replace tights with nude fishnets or other open-weave, patterned hosiery.
2. Transition your Shoes
- Get out of your knee-high boots and replace them with ankle boots or booties.
- If it’s a little warmer, wear ballet flats or closed toe oxfords. Wait on the perforated shoes.
- Choose light gray boots over black ones; tan boots over brown suede ones.
4. Lighten and Brighten up
- Pull out layering pieces (cardigans, jackets, shawls, scarves, vests) that are in your lightest neutral shades and wear these now.
- Wear lighter colored jeans instead of dark waxed jeans or corduroy jeans.
- Instead of wearing print tops or dresses with dark backgrounds, choose prints with white or lighter colored backgrounds.
- Continue to enjoy your stripes. Black and white is lighter and brighter than charcoal and black. Try combinations in white and lime, white and tangerine, white and pink, even if they’re long-sleeved.
- Start changing your makeup now. Spring colors will lighten and brighten your face. Change your nail and toe polish colors as well.
- It’s time to change your handbag. Look for bags in bright spring colors or lighter metallics. Bright colored totes or smaller sized bags in punchy colors are great wardrobe accents.
4. Reduce the Volume
- Wear a tunic instead of a cowl neck sweater.
- Wear fine cashmere sweaters or merino wool rather than heavy textured cable knits.
- A black leather jacket looks more spring-like when it’s collarless. Add a scarf around your neck if you need the warmth. Choose one in a light or bright shade.
- Infinity scarves in lightweight wool or crinkle cotton or silk are a better choice than those in bulky knits.
- Swap out the puffy coats for trench coats with liners, heavy cotton spring coats or jean jackets as the weather warms up. If you still need a wool coat, lighter colored ones are best right now.
5. Get Fresh Solutions
